Climate

The year 2023 began with a winter marked by regular rainfall between January and February and overall average temperatures, followed by a rather cool March. These climatic conditions resulted in a slight delay in vine budbreak. Spring, moderately rainy, preceded a warm summer, with sustained high temperatures starting from the end of May. The grape harvest began in the second half of September. In mid-month, light rainfall occurred, which helped rebalance grape ripening and complete phenolic maturation.

Historical data and soil

In 1932, seven different areas of Chianti were officially recognized, including Chianti Montalbano, and the entire Carmignano district was thus incorporated into the Chianti DOC appellation. Historical documents attest to the presence of this subzone as early as 800 AD under Frankish rule. The soils of Chianti Montalbano are moderately deep, with a geological origin dating back 70–100 million years to the Sillano Santa Fiora formation. They are rich in sedimentary rocks and argillites, with a good presence of stones.

Vinification

The harvested grapes are crushed and destemmed before being transferred to stainless steel tanks, where alcoholic fermentation begins at a controlled temperature. Maceration lasts approximately 20 days to ensure the extraction of the most elegant tannins. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is transferred to small and medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels, where it ages for at least 12 months. Finally, the wine undergoes bottle aging for at least 6–8 months before being released onto the market.
